Published on the occasion of the exhibition Stanislava Kovalcikova Psychroluta Mar 31st – May 6th, 2023 Caprii, Orangeriestr. 6, 40213 Düsseldorf.
Since January 2023, our sister gallery Caprii is open and energising playful collaboration and dynamic exhibition-making in the local Düsseldorf artscape. Each of the solo and group exhibitions of Caprii is accompanied by a booklet, which offers an extended plane for holistically encountering the praxis of the respective artists.
The second edition displays a series of new works by Stanislava Kovalcikova. Drawing on contemporary and historical perspectives of the human figure, her work directly references art historical styles. Equally, Kovalcikova’s work operates through a tradition of Eastern orthodox mysticism. An exploration of the figure as an icon, her work examines issues of familiarity, alienation, self- perception, and the construction of identity; the individual psychic experience portrayed in her work is always referential to something larger—an archetype from a collective narrative.
The booklet series is made using remnant paper stock sourced from Druckerei Kettler.
