Press release

On June 1st the Victor Pinchuk Foundation and PinchukArtCentre presented
The Future Generation Art Prize@Venice 2013. The exhibition includes the 21 artists, from 16 different countries, who were shortlisted in the second edition of the first global art prize for artists up to 35.

The exhibition is an official Collateral Event of the 55th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia. It will be on view at the Palazzo Contarini Polignac (Venice, Italy) from June 1 - September 1, 2013.

Victor Pinchuk, the Founder of the Future Generation Art Prize: “Our tradition at the PinchukArtCentre is the future. The Future Generation Art Prize is the best embodiment of this. And now here in Venice, young artists tell the world about the future. Their art is real futurology. I believe artists can show our world of tomorrow better than politicians and analysts. And here we have the best of them.”

Damien Hirst, Mentor Artist of theFuture Generation Art Prize: “The Future Generation Art Prize has been really well realised – I love it. It’s fantastic when there are young people making an effort to present contemporary art, especially in an historic artistic centre like Venice. It’s a great combination. It is hard as a young artist to put on a show and that is why I got involved with the Future Generation Art Prize.”

The 21 independent artists’ statements include among others the Winner of the Main Prize, British artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and the 5 winners of the Special Prize: Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil), Micol Assael (Italy), Ahmet Ögüt (Turkey), Rayyane Tabet (Lebanon), and Marwa Arsanios (Lebanon).

The other artists are Meris Angioletti (Italy), Abigail DeVille (United States), Aurelien Froment (France), Mykyta Kadan (Ukraine), Meiro Koizumi (Japan), Andre Komatsu (Brazil), Eva Kotatkova (Czech Republic), Tala Madani (Iran), Basim Magdy (Egypt), Amalia Pica (Argentina), Agnieszka Polska (Poland), Emily Roysdon (United States), Yan Xing (China) and two groups: Joao Maria Gusmao + Pedro Paiva (Portugal) and R.E.P. (Ukraine).

The Future Generation Art Prize@Venice 2013 offers a rich scope of artistic positions, mapping and discovering groundbreaking and future tendencies of a new generation of artists.

Confronted with the context of the late 15th century palazzo Polignac, this new generation of artists took up the challenge to engage in a dialogue with the impressing palazzo, mainly presenting new works.

Among the highlights of the exhibition will be the special created, site-specific installations of Abigail Deville, Mykyta Kadan, Eva Kotatkova, Yan Xing and REP.

“The Future Generation Art Prize @ Venice” is commissioned by Eckhard Schneider and curated by Björn Geldhof.
