The title might suggest a "Best of Modern" exhibition. But of course, the idea is deceptive, since the artist deals with the possibilities of the painted picture in the face of the ubiquitous flood of images. He does this by exploring art-historical precedents such as Jasper Johns' iconic Flags and Targets as well as other image strategies used by mainstream products and media.

Did you always want to be an artist?
I always wanted to do something that wasn't mentioned in the career booklet. What kind of profession should that be, an artist? Somehow it’s so weird, but once you're in it, you don't want to get out anymore.

The mass media is changing, what is your observation?
My right thumb is getting longer and my eyes are hanging down to my knees. If Darwin was right, humankind will soon look terrible, but will totally be iPhone-capable.

Pop culture influences your work. Are there also books and movies that do inspire you?
Sure, most of all I love everything Mafia related. The Sopranos, The Godfather, the Gomorrah series.... I just read John Niven's "Straight White Male" and I thought it was super good. The title is already such a thing.

Who do you exchange ideas with?
Right now, I'm happy when the lady at the gas station has a good day and doesn't snarl at me when I buy a "bockwurst with bread roll and mustard“. It's the only store around where I can get lunch from my studio. That's a great exchange for the day.

You work with a projector, what freedom does that give you? Your works seem spontaneous, but they are the opposite...
I project my drawings onto the canvas as a part of the painting. I stay in my own thing and can claim to be media-reflexive. Quite a good trick, isn't it?

Title from where? Boys Club, Gang Break, Kleiner Vandalismus Spaß...
Oh, I always imagine that the paintings are film scenes. And then the rest falls into place.

You take different material (songs, headlines, images) from the present, combine it and create your own snapshot, how do you know when to stop?

"Honestly, when the picture is full. And somehow "loud.""

How does it feel to stand in front of a finished work?
For a short time the uncertainty is gone then.

You also make a lot of music, conduct an orchestra and are a bandleader. Has your relationship with music changed over the years?
Yes, it used to be super serious. Today it's more of an assertion. I want people to believe me. On stage or in an exhibition. A bit like a cult leader.
