In the tradition of trompe l’oeil, this canvas shows a wooden panel. Translucid like a veneer, the panel reveals the shadow of a figure. With the wood pattern reminiscent of flames, the shadow seems to be blazing. Referencing the painting series Twilight’s Gaze, where the statue of a saint is shown aflame, Her Shadow’s Blaze also seems to depict the burning of an idol – and yet there is nothing to be seen but a shadow on wood.
