Until October 2015, when she held a solo exhibition at the Piktogram Gallery, in Warsaw, the work of Dorota Jurczak (Warsaw, 1978) was still practically unknown in her country of origin. The artist has lived, worked and exhibited outside Poland ever since she moved to Hamburg in 1999, in order to study at the Hochschule für bildende Künste. She moved to Brussels in 2007, where she lived and worked for seven years. Many of Dorota Jurczak's works depict a mournful and macabre world, a kind of theatre of cruelty, inhabited by strange creatures, frequently composite figures that lie somewhere between human and animal, or between human and inanimate. Over the years, however, one can note a continuous change in her work, in the sense of both an ever greater pacification of her always intriguing iconography and imaginary and a greater refinement in formal and expressive terms.
